VTC to Host Brewing Short Course
Randolph — For the second year running, Vermont Tech will offer a brewing short course for entrepreneurs and home brewers.
The class is set for May 11-17, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., at the Drop-In Brewing Co. in Middlebury, Vt.
Taught by the Drop-In’s owner, Steve Parkes, it will cover the science, safety and sensory evaluation skills needed to work effectively in a brewery, the college said in a recent news release. Students will be exposed to the equipment, general operation and science of brewing through hands-on experience at the Drop-In.
Parkes is a judge for the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup.
“Students are able to learn something they’re passionate about, while gaining certification and college credit at the same time,” said Chris Dutton, director for the college’s Institute for Applied Agriculture and Food Systems.
“Last year’s class had an excellent experience, and (Parkes) was an exemplary instructor.”
Those who complete the course receive a certificate stating that they’ve been trained in practical and comprehensive brewing techniques, the principles governing the brewing of quality craft beer, and the science of fermentation.
The $1,500 registration fee includes the course, certification, field trips and meals. Enrolling for academic credit adds an additional $100 to the cost.
