Jewell Transport Will Propose New Facility at Industrial Park
Claremont — The trucking company that is proposing to build a new facility in the Syd Clarke Industrial Park will present a site plan to Planning Board on Monday.
Jewell Transport now operates in a 71,000-square-foot building at 356 River Road it bought in 2004 and the new parcel is less than a mile to the south at the corner of Grissom Lane and River Road.
According to the site plan application, the company, which transports the large bridge girders for Canam Steel, also on River Road, would construct an 11,280-square-foot maintenance area and truck repair shop with a 2,340-square-foot office. The location would be near River Road, in the northwest corner of the 12-acre parcel. A historic home on the property that was built in 1789 is being dismantled by a Norwich business, Keeper Barn.
Claremont’s Planning and Development Director Nancy Merrill said last week Jewell has a purchase-and-sales agreement with the property owner, the Claremont Development Authority, and the agreement would be executed once the site plan is approved.
Jewell bought the building it now occupies from a company that had planned to manufacture wood pellets. Before that, the owner was a maker of fiber board.
Jewell employs 14, according to its application.
