Alex DeFelice, who lives in White River Junction Vt., has worked at the Co-Op for seven years. He inspects the produce received from local farmers and other suppliers. The produce goes through many “sorts”: if it looks good it’s sold to consumers; if it has small blemishes it goes to Willing Hands; if it’s not fit for humans, it goes to a pig farm and if it’s bad, it get’s composted. Norman Porter from White River Junction has been with the Co-Op for 10 years. He watches consumers and is there to answer questions about the fruits and vegetables the Co-Op carries. He even makes suggestions on packing to suppliers, like putting the names on apples on the handles so consumers can easily see what variety is in the bag. Nancy Nutile-McMenemy photograph.
